The former Juventus coach and Genoa manager has put his faith in youth
Boasting the fourth-largest population in the Italian province of Lombardy, Bergamo is second only to Milan as the most visited city in that region. Its airport is dubbed as ‘Milan Bergamo’ by the budget airlines, its 120,000 inhabitants could be forgiven for having an inferiority complex, but the location and indeed its football team has a very strong identity of its own.
Created in 1907, Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio has found itself in the shadows of San Siro giants that reside just 40km away, but are able to boast a proud history of producing young talent. Lauded as having one of the best youth academies in the world, the likes of Gaetano Scirea, Roberto Donadoni and more recently Manolo Gabbiadini have all started their careers with La Dea.
After a series of relegations and promotions since 2002, Atalanta have resided in Italy’s top league for the last six consecutive seasons, but it has been during a stunning campaign this term that has seen the Oricibi really have an impact on Serie A. Under the guidance of Coach Gian Piero Gasperini, this team are full to the brim with young Italian talent, but regularly fielding the youngsters wasn’t always part of the plan.
After three years with Genoa, the former Juventus youth coached arrived in Bergamo at the start of the campaign but a miserable start saw his side slump to four defeats in the opening five rounds. Their misery compounded by a 3-0 trouncing at the hands of league newcomers Cagliari and a 1-0 loss to Palermo, Gasperini admitted that he was very close to the sack so early on. “At one stage I felt like a dead man walking,” the Coach told to a local newspaper. “Against Crotone all the directors were at the stadium, looking like they were at a funeral. I think the flowers were ready too.”
A 3-1 victory in that match against Crotone eased the pressure, but it was the next result – coming against Napoli in week seven – that truly highlighted Gasperini’s master plan. Fielding a team made up of youngsters, the Bergamaschi took on a Napoli side that was unbeaten in the league and fresh off the back of a 4-2 Champions League victory over Benfica. Injuries and suspensions played their part, but the Coach opted to start Mattia Caldara (22), Roberto Gagliardini (22) and Andrea Petagna (21).
Whilst the latter came from Milan’s youth academy, both Gagliardini and Caldara are both home grown exports. The January transfer window saw the latter duo sign for Inter and Juventus respectively, with Gagliardini slotting seamlessly into the Nerazzurri starting lineup and earning a call-up to the Italian national side. Caldara meanwhile, was purchased for €15 million by Max Allegri’s Juventus and immediately loaned back to Atalanta in a mutually beneficial deal.
Following the win over Napoli, Atalanta carried on going from strength to strength, and now dream of achieving a European place. The club reached their highest ever points total (55) earlier this month, a remarkable accomplishment considering the aforementioned player sales in January.

But it was not just against Napoli when the Bergamo-based club bounced back from adversity. Consecutive defeats at the hands of Juventus and Udinese back in December brought an extreme test of resilience for Gasperini’s men, but his side fought back to form with an away point against neighbours Milan and took all six points from the subsequent two rounds of Serie A.
Even a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Inter earlier this month could not stop them, as the band of talented youngsters – who could be forgiven for letting their heads drop – responded with a 3-0 win over Pescara the very next weekend.

With their lofty dreams of Europe, Atalanta are under no illusions that their young talent – such as reported Premier League target Franck Kessie – are still highly coveted. “For us, it’s a source of great satisfaction that Atalanta is a springboard for players to move to the the best teams. We have to respect our means,” general manager Luca Percassi told Radio Anch’io. “It would be unnatural for us not to accept significant transfers. To see [Roberto] Gagliardini going to a great team is a source of pride and satisfaction for us and gives strength to our and our philosophy and the whole environment at the club.”

It is this very philosophy, spearheaded by their youth-minded Coach, that has seen Atalanta rise up the ranks this term.
